The Swedish furniture juggernaut Ikea just opened a big blue-and-yellow store in my town. This was cause for widespread jubilation, and trumpets sounded from on high. Seriously, life felt like it was about to get a whole lot more efficient and good-looking, just like the Ikea catalog promised it would.
Has it? Well, not exactly, but I do have a nifty new table and chairs in my kitchen, and I find myself examining every corner of my house for underutilized storage space. Not that I’d know what to do if I found said space — I tend to become paralyzed with indecision the moment I enter Ikea, simply because there’s so much to look at and process.
If you’re past the slack-jawed stage, have a look at Ikea Hacker, a blog devoted to the clever creations people come up with using raw materials gathered at Ikea. Because most Ikea furniture comes flat-packed and must be built at home, the opportunities for hackery are endless. A creative DIYer’s dream.

Ikea is promising to open a store in North Carolina. Until then we can only lick the pages of their catalog & dream.
We did have a chance to visit their Pittsburgh store - terribly exciting.
