As I stated at the beginning of this bathroom remodel project, a) I don’t know anything and b) I have terrible taste. So when I received so much valuable color advice from all of you last week, I jumped for joy and sang praises to the heavens. Decorating by committee can be fun! Thanks so much for your help.

Remember these? Stain #1 was the clear favorite, but a good handful of you—interestingly, those of you with an interior design bent—liked the more “off” color of Stain #2. I took this to heart, deciding to use Stain #1 for the vanity tables, then use a green paint—one that resembled Stain #2—on the rest of the cabinetry. Though I’d originally been really attracted to the knottiness of the pine, some of you suggested it might look like cheap paneling if it were stained. This is probably because it is cheap paneling.
So here’s the greenish off-color I picked:

I spent about four minutes choosing it, because color choices scare me.
Then, when the painters stained the vanities, they looked like this:

I really liked the stain color, but I noticed it didn’t really resemble Stain #1. And sure enough, when I checked the can of stain, I discovered that it was actually Stain #4, which had been my original favorite and which a few of you had also chosen. Evidently, I’d told the painter I wanted “the stain on the far left.” Only problem was, the sample board was upside down at the time. That can make a difference, you know. Words to live by.

These are the light fixtures, for my vanity at least. Marlboro Man doesn’t like them. He thinks they look like they have a rash.
And speaking of the vanities, here are some more shots:

These are the faucets. I like black faucets. They are what I’ve been missing all my life. Now I can move forward.

I also like this tile. Marlboro Man picked it out.

We drove two hours to get to the nearest tile store, and he walked in, pointed straight to it, and said, “How ’bout that one?” It took him thirteen seconds. And the funny thing is, it’s some bizarre stone floor tile in some bizarre floor tile pattern. But somehow, he knew it would work because he’s smart and I’m not. And he has taste and I don’t. That’s why we’re, like, soooooo perfect together.

He also picked this tile for the shower floor and the area around our tub.

That Marlboro Man. He’s such a Renaissance (Tile) Man.
The point to all this is, in one fell swoop I’ve managed to please almost all of you who weighed in with your choices last week. I chose Stain #1 for the vanities because that was the frontrunner. I chose a paint color resembling Stain #2 for the cabinets because you interior designers told me to. And I wound up with Stain #4 on the vanities because I accidentally had the sample board turned upside down. How’s that for Middle Child Syndrome?
As for those of you who favored Stain #3, what can I do to make things right with you?

I was going to ask you to pick a wall color for me, but after you so freely gave of yourself last week, I just didn’t have the heart. Plus, I’m going to ask your opinion about something next week, and I don’t want to wear you out. So I won’t ask. I promise. Just rest. Rest, my friends. Rest.

I’d originally picked “Pure White” for the walls because as I’ve pointed out before, I don’t know anything and I don’t like making choices and I have no taste…and I just don’t like spending any time thinking about things relating to my house. I like thinking about things relating to my camera. And my computer. And my two websites. And what I’m going to eat for dinner. And what I’m going to eat for dessert. And what I’m going to eat for my second dessert. So I’m not going to ask. No…I’m not.
In other home improvement news:

My laundry room is getting closer to completion.

At the very least, I finally—after five weeks without them—have a washer and dryer. And just in time; last week I came this close to using a washboard I found out in the storage shed. I think that would’ve been the end of me.

And, most importantly, I finally have a place to put all the Bounce Dryer Sheets I like to buy in bulk.
I just love buying dryer sheets in bulk. It brings me more happiness than I ever could have imagined.

paint the ceiling above your vanity a flat black…..
Your ceiling will disappear, but your faucet will “Pop”
October 15th, 2007 at 3:59 am
My husband has to pick out my clothes, or I look like a 90-year old librarian!
October 15th, 2007 at 4:02 am
Ree, I can hardly believe it! My new bathroom sink faucet is very, very similar to yours! Mine is oil-rubbed bronze instead of black, but has the white enamel hot and cold “handle” thingies; I just love it! I knew that was the one I wanted but could not find it anywhere, after searching the five-county area where I live. Ended up ordering off the computer, and so glad I did! I love ALL your tile!
October 15th, 2007 at 5:29 am
I love your laundry room. Please send it to me. I’ll pay the shipping. Thank you.
October 15th, 2007 at 5:30 am
Tell us about the photos in the laundry room!!! Which photos will you use in the bath??? When will you redo your bedroom???
October 15th, 2007 at 5:52 am
Me likey your hardware, black is so…timeless…chic…finger print-forgiving!
I never pegged MM as a metro. I’m thinkin’ that just upped his “hawt” factor a wee bit :).
Since it’s a well-documented fact I can’t choose between chocolate, strawberry or vanilla, I have no idea why I didn’t ask for help when we were workin’ on our 8-month bathroom renovation. All 12 of my readers might’ve been helpful ;).
p.s. (praying, holding my lucky rabbit’s foot and crossing my fingers, toes and eyes…please work this time please work this time Mr. Link Code…)
October 15th, 2007 at 5:53 am
Thank you God, Bugs (rest his soul) and miscellaneous body parts :).
October 15th, 2007 at 6:44 am
Soft yellow. That is all I’ll say since you didn’t even ask.
The laundry room is making me a bit green (with envy, not sickness).
October 15th, 2007 at 6:49 am
I like the idea of painting the ceiling black, but that is so unconventional that MM might not understand it. I know my husband surely wouldn’t. I have just recently convinced mine that all ceilings do not have to be builder grade white!
October 15th, 2007 at 6:50 am
Oh, and soft yellow for the walls is a good choice. I agree with Kristi.
October 15th, 2007 at 6:52 am
I absolutely love the green paint that you chose and the vanity tile is gorgeous. Great laundry room as well - who wouldn’t love all that room.
October 15th, 2007 at 7:00 am
Dryer Sheets! Eeew!
October 15th, 2007 at 7:22 am
I want your house. I could live in the kitchen and when I got bored…I could go soak in the tub for awhile. Seriously…amazing, amazing place you have.
October 15th, 2007 at 7:33 am
Since you didn’t ask, I’d go for more of a very light peachy/beige instead of soft yellow paint. The tiles have so much yellow in them that yellow walls might be too much. Just a little contrast, not a horrible fuschia or puce, will soften up the tile without making everything the absolutely same color. I’d go with something warm and light that contrasts just a little with the tile.
What color towels are you having? What art work? There may be a color in those things just dying to be painted on your bathroom walls.
And I double the bid on the laundry room by offering to pay TWICE the cost of the shipping. HA!
October 15th, 2007 at 7:38 am
What do you mean you don’t have taste? You obviously do! (You chose MM, didn’t you?)
BTW, for those of us who collect paint chips (me, me, me!), could you please tell us the brand and name/number of that green paint? I like it! Thanks.
October 15th, 2007 at 7:38 am
I LOVE the choices you’ve made, awesome!
I’m so glad you didn’t ask what color paint.
October 15th, 2007 at 7:39 am
Well, I wasn’t going to comment until I saw the Bounce. We live right around the corner from the global manufacturer of Bounce. Sometimes, if the wind is right, it smells Bounce-fresh outside. And I can always tell when they’ve changed the scent because when DH comes home from work, he smells of Summer Breeze, or Spring Awakened or Outdoor Fresh. He especially loves it when he smells of Aloe & Lilac. Really. If you like buying in bulk, you would fall over with the biggest hiney tingle ever if you were around to witness the truck sale at Bounce headquarters. Just imagine tall towers of shrinkwrapped cases of Bounce just waiting for someone to take them home. Cardboard boxes passed person to person down a long line toward waiting employees ready to toss a year’s worth of Bounce in their truck. Yup, bulk-buyer’s nirvana.
Glad the laundry room is nearly done. Good luck on the paint choice in the bathroom. I can’t wait to see what is recommended. I have no talent for such things so I’m not even going to try.
October 15th, 2007 at 7:43 am
Absolutely LOVE the black faucet!!!
October 15th, 2007 at 7:44 am
Oh Ree.
You may rue the day when you try to clean that unfinished vanity tile. I know I did.
(not to be negative or anything ’cause obviously I liked it enough to put something similar into my bathroom….)
October 15th, 2007 at 7:50 am
I love the green paint so much, I think you should paint the vanities to match!!
October 15th, 2007 at 7:54 am
the bathroom looks great. I liked #4 and think it turned out great on the vanities (are you putting in medicine cabinets??). I’m glad you painted too, I like the green it’s better than the stain, looks more finished and cleaner. MM did a great job on the tile picking, looks fab!
Now I have a quesiton about the laundry room. Where’s the sink? And if there isn’t a sink where/how do you stain remove? Do you have some secret? I mean you MUST have more stains that the average city gal, right?
As for the bounce, I’m a convert, when I switched to the front loaders almost 9 years ago, I switched to liquid softeners…….you should try it, it’s a big difference!
October 15th, 2007 at 7:56 am
LOVE the laundry room…damn, I’m jealous!
October 15th, 2007 at 8:07 am
Looks great Ree!!!
October 15th, 2007 at 8:08 am
Can I live in your laundry room? Pretty pretty please?
And, just for giggles, can I ask what the heck you’ve been doing without a washer and dryer for 5 weeks? We’d have been long out of clothes at this point. Is there a fluff and fold out in the middle of nowhere?
Of course, I say that, but every so often, I end up way behind on laundry, and I drive ours to the fluff and fold and pay an obscene amount of money to have someone else get me out of my misery.
October 15th, 2007 at 8:12 am
Others may want your laundry room….. I’ll just ship my laundry to you.
Light starch please.
October 15th, 2007 at 8:47 am
I love the counter for folding and how long it is. Just about perfect. But where oh where to pile the clean laundry when you’re ignoring it and don’t want to fold. There isn’t a good piling area.
October 15th, 2007 at 8:49 am
Thank funky tile is called travertine and it is very chic! Great choice MM.
October 15th, 2007 at 8:56 am
Thanks for the b’room update, the colors are great. MM does have wonderful taste. After all, he picked you, too.
Ree–please don’t forget to SEAL the grout! I think it’s several weeks that the grout has to cure before it can be sealed, so get those tile guys back to finish the job. (Good luck on that one)
or do it yourself–it’s not difficult. But if you don’t, all that lovely white grout will be dingey grey/brown in a few months, especially if your water is hard.
Which looks awful. Ask me. We moved into a new house where the grout had not been sealed, but I didn’t know. Months later and many tredious hours of scrubbing with a toothbrush and bleaching, we sealed it and we’re so glad we did. The grout always looks nice, and sealing it has saved SO much time during kitchen and bath cleanings!
Rather than drive two hours (where on earth do you live?) to the tile store, buy some online.
October 15th, 2007 at 8:59 am
Just gorgeous. Ree, you did great.
October 15th, 2007 at 9:01 am
What a beautiful laundry room. Definitely an improvement!
October 15th, 2007 at 9:07 am
Oh Ree, I’m with Tammy K.-Oregon regarding the tile on the vanity. We have that on our sons vanity and it is a pain in the you-know-what to clean. And we have an above counter sitting sink like you have. Never, ever again will I go with it. Looks beautiful but a pain-in-the-butt to clean.
October 15th, 2007 at 9:07 am
Instead of Bounce, try dryer balls. They cost $10 but promise to save that much in electricity or gas bills very quickly. I just got some and dried some towels. The towels are very soft!
October 15th, 2007 at 9:09 am
Love it Ree!! That green paint is just perfect. May I suggest adding some lilac colors? I love a nice sage green with lilac. Can’t wait to see what you choose for wall color. A deep blue would look nice.
October 15th, 2007 at 9:23 am
Nice tones. Now: select the paint color that most closely resembles a Camel.
October 15th, 2007 at 9:25 am
Wow! It all looks beautiful. Love the green you chose.
Yes, please tell us brand/name.
October 15th, 2007 at 9:49 am
Malton (#1073) by Benjamin Moore would be nice on the walls.
October 15th, 2007 at 9:50 am
I never knew there were such things as black faucets…they look really sharp! =)
October 15th, 2007 at 9:58 am
Yay for Ree, your laundry room is almost completed!! Sorry the dogs are watching you in bath tub, but they (like all of us) adore you!
Good luck with the wall color. I can’t decide anything, I usually just hemm and haw until my husband can’t take it anymore and decides for me. That way if it is a terrible choice, I don’t have to take blame for it…it has been working for years.
October 15th, 2007 at 10:04 am
Excellent choices! LOVE the green paint. Loving the large folding area in the laundry room too.
October 15th, 2007 at 10:23 am
Ree,
It’s me the Southern California Interior Designer, Hi There!
I know you didn’t ask for it but here is my 2 cents worth.
Since you have several different tones and textures going on in the space I would like to suggest that you chose a wall paint color that is very calm and soothing and very neutral in tone. That would be a calm pale beige that will help blend all the different colors together. Try to stay away from a yellow to green beige tone as it will cause you to take on a green cast in the mirror and you will find youself wondering what happened to you rosey pink MM glow.
Keep you ceiling white or you will feel like you are in a cave in that small of a space. Plus it help play up you Subway tile and sinks.
Love the paint you selected for the cabinets and paint is your friend because if you get tired of it, it is the easiest and cheapest thing to change. (I’d go ahead and paint the vanities)
Great faucets! Laundry room looks beautiful! A little color on those walls wouldn’t hurt either.
Angela in CA
P.S. make sure once the grout is cured you seal it very well as it will become a cleaning mightmare
October 15th, 2007 at 10:38 am
I love the laundry room. Oh, to have a surface on which to fold my clothes …
October 15th, 2007 at 10:50 am
I love the laundry room too, tub looks nice and big…….Don’t know if I love the faucet…. We missed you yesterday, one reader had me worried when we hadn’t heard from you……..but obviously you were soaking in the tub for the doggies viewing pleasure……
October 15th, 2007 at 11:10 am
Hey! I’m almost positive that you have the same washer/dryer that I got about four months ago. I hope you’re as happy with them as I have been with mine. I LOVE my new washer/dryer!
October 15th, 2007 at 11:12 am
I love your ‘non-style’. It’s beautimous.
Now, girlfriend, WHY do you only have one washer and one dryer? Let’s see: 4 kids x 3 sets of clothes per day=12 fulls sets of clothing, 1 towel per day per person=6 towels/6 washcloths, probably 3 or more handtowels, plus kithen cloths…..and only one washer and dryer. Methinks your laundry life is slightly unbalanced.
October 15th, 2007 at 11:21 am
I agree about painting the vanities that beautiful green rather than the stain, now that I see it. I never saw black faucets before. That is really coool! If you paint the ceiling black, don’t forget to put some stars there too!
October 15th, 2007 at 11:22 am
I know you’re not asking, buuuttt…my entire house is painted in the three paint colors from the Lyndhurst Stone swatch you’ve got showing there. And I love it!
October 15th, 2007 at 11:48 am
Fabulous choices, it all looks sophisticated and country, irony?
October 15th, 2007 at 11:48 am
I see you have what I call a “Murphy Ironing Board” in the laundry room (reminiscent to me of the old Murphy beds that folded down from the wall….). Had one in my last home and LOVED it. Everything’s looking great!
October 15th, 2007 at 12:00 pm
just recently had my office painted a medium khaki color and i just love it - i too have no taste for decorating. All the walls in my house are white (navajo white, linen white, white-white). Also, as an appliance salesperson you got a good washer & dryer - I covet that front loader! and isn’t the pedestal with storage the neatest thing? You hardly have to bend at all to take clothes in and out. Cant wait to see the completed bathroom.
October 15th, 2007 at 12:48 pm
Wow Ree, you’re making progress.
Since you have been so open about asking our opinion - here is mine. You have a lot of good things going on in your bathroom, so now you need to pull it together. I would definitely leave the ceilings white to balance the stark white in the tub and shower.
I suggest you put the same green paint on the vanities to pull the woodwork together.
I would pick out a soft beige for the paint - like from the first picture, top row, the tri-sample - the middle sample (or to make it easier, the third from the left, top row). Definitely don’t go with anything with a yellow cast because it will tend to over-yellow with the other tones in the room.
Then you need to do something to pull in the black from those cool new faucets - maybe a black rug or black & while pictures with neutral mattes and black frames. And, maybe a piece of black sculpture to place on your vanity.
I can’t wait to see the completed project. And, while the painters are there, get them to paint your laundry room walls. Love the pictures in there - where are they going? Please make sure they put a good sealer on your counters.
October 15th, 2007 at 1:10 pm
Wow! I am just loving your whole bathroom and laundry room…I am getting lots of ideas from you and all those who comment for when I remodel my bathroom. I have no color or style sense at all. so reading all the comments and looking at what you have done is just great.
October 15th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
I agree with everything Angela said (not that you asked). :o)
I would seriously consider painting the vanities. They look unfinished, especially with the almost non-existant stain color. With all the beautiful textures in the tiles, and those gorgeous fixtures, they just look like unfinished pine. . . like the carpenter skipped out and didn’t finish his job. Plus, they’ll be a lot easier to keep clean if they’re painted (especially down next to the floor). You could go a shade darker or lighter than the cabinetry, keeping it in the same green family, but adding a little variety.
And, I agree you don’t want a lot of yellow or green around the vanity. Get something beige-y or creamy. You don’t want to look jaundiced or sea-sick in your reflection every morning. But, you want enough color that those shower tiles will stand out more.
Just my thoughts, not that you asked.
October 15th, 2007 at 1:48 pm
LOOOOOVE the remodel so far! What do you mean you have no taste? Looks great and I hope you don’t ask any of us for any more opinions because I think your initial gut reactions are fabulous choices. I am jealous of your black faucets. I want one. And an apron-front sink in my kitchen. *sigh* Back to my dirty garage to do my laundry… (insert tiny violin music here)
October 15th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Ditto on sealing the grout! It’s always good for us girls to work in teams instead of going it alone. Thanks for letting us peek into your world.
October 15th, 2007 at 3:39 pm
Have you considered having two washers and dryers? When I read comments that you share about your laundry, that question always pops in my head. I know they are pricey but gosh, think of the loads you can accomplish in one go-round.
October 15th, 2007 at 3:42 pm
PW, I love the bathroom. Well done! The laundry room looks fantastic as well.
October 15th, 2007 at 4:39 pm
Ree, I just bought a brand new 3500 sq foot home and I don’t have a clue as to what to put in it. I picked tile, fire place brick, granite counter tops, more tile, paint, all in neutral colors because I’m SO AFRAID of making a BIG MISTAKE but I wish now I’d used your idea and asked for online help!
Your bathroom is looking beautiful. I have those washers and dryers and I LOVE them! I didn’t get the drawers underneath because I didn’t need the storage but I’ve regretted it. They make them higher and I wouldn’t have to bend over so often and so far if I’d put the drawers under the washer and dryer. Live and learn.
Can’t wait to see your finished product and I wish I had help because now I have to buy an entire house full of furniture and have no idea where to start!
October 15th, 2007 at 5:45 pm
It’s all beautiful, Ree — I like the greenish stain/paint, it looks very pretty. Country yet modern.
I remember watching my grandma use a washboard when I was little (she kept one for things that were really stained), and being amazed that that’s how people used to wash their clothes. I love laundry technology!
October 15th, 2007 at 6:29 pm
Mrs A::
RE:: black ceiling….
We never tell them what we are doing, we cleverly plan it to be done whilst they are away….and time how long it takes them to notice upon their return….
When is MM’s next trip??
It’s just a 6 X 8 space Ree —trust me—
Try the flat black —V awesome
October 15th, 2007 at 10:48 pm
It all looks fabulous!
I love how everything is so oversized at your place, like the l a r g e vanity. Your ceilings look high, too. You’re making me want to knock down walls and expand this place.
October 15th, 2007 at 11:41 pm
Well for not wanting anymore input you got pages full!!! As well as unsolicited critique…
Looks good, looks real real good!!
October 16th, 2007 at 12:51 am
Hi, love the tile and faucet choices…do you realise you will hardly ever need to clean!!!
As a fellow farmer’s wife, not being able to see the black hand dirt on the vanities sounds beautiful to me!
Wish I knew what drying sheets were…I’d buy some! Tracey
October 16th, 2007 at 9:21 am
Ree:
Try ripping your Bounce sheets in 1/2. They work just as well and you will save money! I promise - 1/2 a sheet will do the trick - even for your ranch laundry!
October 16th, 2007 at 7:10 pm
I wish you could post a fish eye view picture of the bathroom. I’m having trouble putting it all together. It looks nice and earthy though.
Why the heck do you have an ironing board in the laundry?! I would have thought that would have been one of the perks of farm life….no ironing….of course unless you have a wedding or funeral to attend.
October 16th, 2007 at 8:31 pm
I heart your laundry room, Ree!
As a fellow farm wife I have to ask, do you have a mudroom with a sink, cuz I’m pretty fully aware of the sludge that gets slopped around in my bathroom and I’m NEVER painting the walls beige (though a similar color would look great in that bathroom)!
October 16th, 2007 at 10:20 pm
I’m thinkin’ Hot Pants Pink for the walls. No? Magical Magenta? Seafoam green? Hmmm…I’m usually so good with these things.
How did you find a guy who looks hot in jeans AND can pick out tile AND is straight? wow.
October 17th, 2007 at 12:53 pm
I just purchased the exact same washer and dryer with the pedestals that you chose! I love them. They are awesome!
October 18th, 2007 at 5:05 pm
Love the black fixtures with the white sink and the stone tiles! It all goes so nicely. I would never have gone black (I gravitate towards brushed nickel which is getting to be SO overdone) and it really does make it and complete the look! Nicely done!
October 19th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
What brand of paint are those paint chips? I loved the 2nd to the left in the picture above where you said you had chosen white. I love those colors. Personal opinion since you aren’t asking: I’d choose that. Of course, I’m allergic to white!
